How to Find Your BER. Step by Step

1

Find your MPRN

Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) is on any electricity bill. It starts with 10 and is usually 11 digits long. You can also find it printed on your electricity meter.

2

Go to the National BER Register

Visit ndber.seai.ie and enter your MPRN in the search box. You can also search by address if you don't have your MPRN handy.

3

View your BER certificate & Advisory Report

If your home has a BER, you'll see the rating (A1 to G), the energy value in kWh/m²/year, and the date it was issued. You can also download the Advisory Report, which shows recommended upgrades.

What the BER Ratings Mean

A<75 kWh
B75–150
C150–225
D225–300
E300–380
F380–450
G>450

The number is your home's primary energy use in kWh per square metre per year. Lower is better. The average Irish home is around D1–D2. A well-retrofitted home with a heat pump and solar typically reaches A2–B1.

What If My Home Has No BER?

Not every home has a BER. You only get one when it's assessed by a registered BER assessor. Common reasons to get one:

BER Expired? Here's What to Do

BER certificates are valid for 10 years. If yours has expired (check the date on the register), you'll need a new assessment before you can sell, rent, or apply for grants. A new BER also gives you an updated Advisory Report reflecting current upgrade options and grant levels, which may be very different from 10 years ago.
